A program aimed at simultaneously measuring the different parameters of the near infrared emission has been undertaken. An objective of this program is to record the emission intensity throughout the night in order the measure the sky background signal which should be subtracted from the observations of distant faint astronomical objects. A set of 36 images obtained with a wide-angle CCD camera provides a panorama of the sky. Then, a perspective inversion algorithm is used to obtain a virtual-satellite type image of the emission over a geographic field having an extension of about 2000 km. The projected image shows that the emissive layer frequently presents a series of long regularly spaced wave crests. Fourier analyses are performed to measure the horizontal wavelength, the temporal period and the phase speed. The intensity evolution with time is compared with the neutral density measured using the Rayleigh lidar at the Observatoire de Haute Provence. It is shown that, during the night, the air density and the near-IR emission vary in opposite phases. Recently, a stereoscopic imaging method using two CCD cameras has been tested. Preliminary results provide a 2D chart of the altitude of the barycenter of the layer with a precision of 0.2 km for the altitude determination. An analysis of the emission processes including quenching will be presented.
