We analyze ULF wave activity in the dayside magnetosheath with the four Cluster spacecraft. Using single spacecraft data, we investigate polarization properties such as wave propagation angle with the minimum variance analysis and wave modes by assuming the existence of linear, plane propagating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Then we investigate wave number vectors for different frequencies by means of a wave telescope technique using multi-spacecraft data, obtaining three dimensional dispersion relations experimentally. We find that wave propagation angles obtained from the wave telescope technique are in a fairly good agreement with the angles that are obtained from the minimum variance analysis. From the wave mode and the experimental dispersion relation we estimate the Alfvén velocity. The Alfvén velocity is also calculated using measurements of the magnetic field and the plasma density. Comparison between these different Alfvén velocities enables one to examine the validity of the MHD wave assumption that has been set in the beginning of the analysis. We suggest, from our case study, that the MHD wave assumption is not always justified in the magnetosheath. Future statistical studies of this subject are planned and will provide conditions under which the MHD wave assumption is appropriate.
