Experimental observations are provided of an increase in CH4 concentration between 1978 and 1980 at seven latitudes in the Western Hemisphere from 55 deg N to 53 deg S, indicative of a world increase of about 0.052 + or - 0.005 ppmv CH4 over the period between January 1978 and January 1980. Collections were made in the western U.S., Alaska, the West Indies, and Chile. The last three sampled essentially oceanic air. Seasonal variations and annual trends were determined by comparison with other, local observations. An increase in CH4 concentration is observed over the pre-1978 period, requiring a yearly excess of 0.7 x 10 to the 14th grams for sources over sinks, roughly 17 + or - 5 percent of the yearly total. The nature of the sources and sinks is discussed.
