We show that the lack of soft X-rays and large X-ray absorption column densities of intermediate polar systems are explicable if these systems have (i) large accreting fractional areas f ≳ 0.1, (ii) accretion rates Mṡ ≳ 1017 g s-1 (with most of the luminosity hidden at energies ≲0.1 keV), and (iii) white dwarf masses M ≲ 0.6-1 Msun. We consider the relation to AM Her systems.
