The relative contributions of two mechanisms for magnetospheric current generation to the observed variations in surface geomagnetic fields during the transition of the Bz component of the IMF from negative to positive values are evaluated. Hourly values of the horizontal geomagnetic field components at Alert, Resolute Bay, Cheliuskin and Dixon stations were analyzed for 35 periods when the Bz component of the IMF was greater than zero in the Northern Hemisphere, and field variations related to the intensity of the Bz component were distinguished. It is found that current generation by the reconnection of interplanetary and geomagnetic fields accounts for a current directed from the day side to the night side in the polar cap, and an oppositely directed current in the auroral zone. The decay of a three-dimensional current system, on the other hand, leads to variations at magnetic latitudes between 68 and 71 deg in the first hours following a change in sign, which converge to a narrow band around 71 deg after about three hours.
