Measurements of the configurations of the separate elements of the statistical DP current system of the south polar ionosphere are presented in a study of the possible nature of the current system as a Hall current dependent on the sign of the azimuthal component of the IMF. Variations in geomagnetic field component intensities with respect to their values during null periods, when the By component of the IMF was less than 1.5 nT, were analyzed based on measurements obtained at Antarctic magnetic stations during the first half of 1978. Measurements reveal the DP4 current system in the morning sector to exhibit a statistical and rather uniform structure, while the afternoon sector is characterized by a complex fine structure in the polar electrojet. The observed asymmetry between the morning and afternoon sectors may be explained by a change in the direction of the DP4 vortex current dependent on the sign of By, or a sandwich structure in the dayside electrojet.
