The comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) was observed in an optical long-term observation program between April 1995 and January 2001 at heliocentric distances between 4.6 AU pre- perihelion and 12.8 AU post-perihelion. From longslit spectra and broadband filter images, the dust color and the Afρ parameter was determined. A gasdynamical model was applied to compute a particle size dependent dust ejection velocity and the maximum radius for dust grains to be released from the comets nucleus as functions of heliocentric distance. The dust production rate and the dust to gas mass ratio was determined. No significant variation in dust color with changing heliocentric distance was found. A dust to gas mass ratio of approximately 1.3 was found, showing a slight decrease with increasing heliocentric distance.
