This paper explores the magnetostatic equilibria of coronal magnetic arches using a current sheet model and a nonlinear minimization technique. Two classes of solutions are found, representing arches which are either stable or unstable against spreading of the arch footpoints. Physically, stability properties of the arches are related to the form of magnetic flux redistribution occurring as the footpoints spread. The results suggest that although coronal transients may erupt spontaneously, they are more likely when an impulsive event occurs under a magnetic arch.
