The study deals with possibility of PCA technique (Karhunen - Lo`eve expansion) application for astronomical data compression. Achievable compression ratio and effects of the ratio on star position measurement are presented. The total amount of 20% KLE spectral components has been determined as a sufficient number for high precision measurement. The course of covariance matrix eigen values analysis has been carried out. Real images from BOOTES experiment have been used as testing signals. Key words: BOOTES; PCA; Karhunen-Lo`eve transform; image data compression; lossy coding.
