Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Structure

Scientific paper

Two samples of interplanetary magnetic clouds are compared with each other: 1) sporadic solar-wind streams. They were selected by the criterion of their genetic relation to solar flares or the disappearance of filaments; 2) Klein-Burlaga objects. They were selected by the criterion of a looplike configuration of the magnetic field. For both types of objects there were hodographs of the magnetic field vector, whose main peculiarities turned out to be practically identical. It has been shown that approximately 15 Klein-Burlaga objects should be genetically related either to flares or to the disappearance of filaments, i.e., they belong to the subclass of sporadic streams. The other 31 objects are evidently related to some other kind of features on the Sun. It has been concluded that interplanetary magnetic clouds are subdivided into two subclasses: sporadic streams and the Klein-Burlaga objects.
