An introduction to the field of meteoritics is presented. A classification of meteorites which provides genetic links between individual rocks is outlined. The global history of meteorites is outlined with emphasis on early solar system processes. The need to support meteoritic research is stressed. Meteorites are identified as being the prime source of information about the precursor material of our solar system, the physicochemical conditions during the formation of the solar system as well as the sequence and duration of all the processes involved in the formation of the solar system.
