The paper presents an alternative method to derive the transfer equation of the Stokes vector of arbitrarily polarized radiation in the presence of a magnetic field. The method is based on quantum electrodynamics and allows departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium to be taken into account. Line profiles are studied, and results are presented in terms of the usual spectroscopic quantities, lines strengths and Wigner 3j-symbols. Results are consistent with those of E. and M. Landi Degl'Innocenti (1975), and the method is also suitable for the study of bound-free transitions and scattering processes.
