SATORB is a new model for accurate, long-term simulations of the orbital motions of the mid-sized icy satellites of Saturn. This model is part of a project to investigate the feedback between the dynamical and geophysical evolution of icy satellites. We describe the development of SATORB and the numerical challenges its solution presents.
SATORB was developed in two phases. The first phase involved writing an all inclusive model that contained terms that might be significant. The second phase involved making a given implementation of the force calculation as efficient possible by eliminating terms that were insignificant. This elimination was done using extensive numerical testing and sensitivity analysis. We found for example that the contribution of Saturn's J6 term to the motion of Iapetus was insignificant.
There were two numerical challenges. One was to make the implementation of the model as efficient as possible to ensure long simulations could be completed in reasonable time. We experimented with different integrators and using parallelism in the force calculations. The other challenge was to minimize the growth of the integration error over the simulation interval. This challenge was met by using a sufficiently small stepsize and special techniques for controlling the round-off error.
