This is the first in a series of papers where data are used in the Asteroid Photometric Catalogue to derive physical information about asteroids. The basic reduction technique performed to obtain composite lightcurves and their Fourier expansions is described. Special attention is paid to the error analysis which is of high importance for applications since the data base is very inhomogeneous in quality.
