The possible importance of UV fluorescent excitation in observations of H2 lines in galactic nuclei was investigated. Spectra were obtained at R of about 1500 around 2 microns of the 1-0S(1), 2-1S(1), and 1-0S(0) lines of H2 plus the Br-gamma hydrogen recombinaton line of ten galaxies exhibiting Seyfert and/or starburst activity. It is shown that the observed H2 line ratios are consistent with thermal excitation of the H2 emission and rule out any significant pure radiative fluorescent contribution.
