Near-infrared spectroscopic data for 21 Wolf-Rayet stars of type WN and 10 of type WC are presented. The first part of this paper is devoted to He II 10124 A and He I 10830 A. It is shown that the sole use of the equivalent widths of these lines allows the presently sampled WNs population to be empirically divided within six groups which are well connected to the classical WN subtypes and to a temperature scale. The second part of this paper deals with the H(+)/H(2+) ratio as it can be estimated from near-infrared spectra with a special attention to contamination problems which can arise from the He I 3d-nf series. A combination of all of the results presently available confirms the presence of H in nearly all the late WNs with a tendency for a stronger signature in the WN8 group class relative to the WN7 one.
