Active Galactic Nuclei
Scientific paper
A selected sample of radio-quiet and radio-loud quasi-stellar objects has been optically monitored in an effort to test some of the prominent theoretical mechanisms proposed for the origin of optical microvariability in active galactic nuclei. Among 19 RQQSOs monitored, only 3 objects (16%) exhibit evidence for microvariation. In contrast, 10 out of 11 RLQSOs (91%) observed in this work exhibit some evidence of microvariation. These results show that there is a distinctive difference in optical microvariability between RQQSOs and RLQSOs. This difference in microvariability characteristics does not provide substantial support for the dominance of the accretion disk model which predicts the ubiquity of microvariations in both classes. In the phenomenological models which invoke hot spots on the accretion disk, QSOs are AGNs viewed close to face-on, as unified schemes indicate to be the case for both RQQSOs and RLQSOs, so the intrinsic variabilities are expected to be visible to the observer. Therefore, one can strongly argue that microvariability is very frequently associated with radio loud AGNs, and this association supports the models based on jets being primarily responsible for observed variations. Also, for the first time, conclusive demonstration of the existence of microvariation in Radio Loud Quasi -Stellar Objects as a class of AGN was achieved. Previous studies have dealt only with the blazar class of object and have not conclusively demonstrated the existence of microvariability in RLQSOs in general.
