The Large Volume Detector (LVD) is a cosmic ray experiment built underground at the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy. The rock overburden at this site, which is at a depth of about 3.8 km water equivalent, shields out all cosmic ray particles except for neutrinos and high energy muons. The objective of this thesis is to study the single muon intensities observed by the LVD, as a function of zenith angle and slant depth. These muons, which are extracted from 10,931 hours of data acquisition, are acceptance corrected for the detector geometry and inefficiencies. The LVD data is found to be in good agreement with measurements of other experiments. The corrected data are also compared with the results of a simulation package comprising two Monte Carlos: HEMAS and MUPROP. The former uses a multicluster model, which reproduces observed features of interactions at collider energies, to produce pions and kaons from interactions of the primary cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The differences between the LVD data and the simulation should show the neutrino-induced muons as well as indicate the possible existence of other muon production channels such as the prompt decay of charm quark mesons, which have a different angular distribution. Although the prompt muon signal was not isolated, there is too much uncertainty in the Monte Carlos as well as the rock composition to exclude prompt muons.
