The multiwavelength properties of a 12 mu m-selected sample of 893 galaxies have been studied. The sample was defined to include all objects in the IRAS Faint Source Catalog with: (1) a 12 mu m , whole-galaxy flux above 0.22 Jy; (2) galaxy-like far-IR colors; and (3) | b| > 25^circ, to avoid the Galactic plane. The sample is shown to be complete to a 12 mu m flux limit of 0.30 Jy and to be relatively free of selection biases, which affect samples selected at higher (optical/UV) and lower (far-IR) frequencies. The latter is related to the fact that the mid-IR is the wavelength region at which the measured flux is the most closely proportional to bolometric flux for the wide variety Seyfert galaxies as well as for most types of non-Seyferts. The first results focus on this entire sample: (1) The IRAS data was analyzed to determine IR color-color diagrams and luminosity functions for Seyferts and non -Seyferts. We also compared the 12 mu m sample to other IR, radio, and optical samples. (2) Near-IR photometry was obtained for all of the Seyferts and more than half of the non-Seyferts, to study near- and far-IR color-color relations for different galaxy types. We also combined these data with IRAS, optical, X-ray, and UV data to estimate bolometric luminosities for the sample galaxies. Remaining results focus on the ~ 122 Seyfert galaxies in the sample, with particular application to unified models relating Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 2s and to probing the intrinsic mechanisms responsible for the multiwavelength energy output of Seyferts: (1) ROSAT pointed observations were obtained of eight X-ray -strong Seyfert 2s and two X-ray-weak Seyfert 1s to see how these atypical objects compare to other Seyferts in terms of soft-X-ray spectral properties. (2) ROSAT survey data were obtained to study the statistical distribution of the soft-X-ray properties of Seyferts, and for comparison with other wavelengths, with particular application to the unified model of Seyfert 1s and 2s. (3) Radio maps from the VLA and OVRO were analyzed to determine spectral slopes, the relation between radio and IR luminosities, the amount of extended radio emission, and radio luminosity functions.
