The collision of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter, in July 1994, resulted in a variety of phenomena (temperature increase, production of dust and new molecules in the Jovian atmosphere, changes in the magnetosphere), which were observed from many sites over a wide range of wavelengths. These studies have given an estimate of the size of the impactors, the energy released in the explosion, the penetration levels and the mass of the newly formed species. There is still uncertainty about the chemical composition of the comet itself.
