The objective of this paper is to discuss the formation and maintenance of global structures observed in galactic disks in normal (nonbarred) spirals with emphasis on the generation of density waves. Both internal dynamical mechanisms and interaction with external galaxies are considered. Such a discussion contains four important aspects: (1) the description of the physical process of evolution that a galactic disk undergoes from the time of its formation; (2) the study of the relevant dynamical mechanisms; (3) the examination of the relevant physical contexts in which the global structure is formed; and (4) the examination of the likelihood and the degree of participation of the various dynamical mechanisms in the process of initiation of the density waves and the formation and maintenance of the observed global wave patterns. We aim at identifying an appropriate approach applicable to the statistical majority of galaxies that are observed to have regular global structures.
