A brief review is presented of the energy spectrum and composition of the cosmic rays up to the knee region near 1015 eV. The measurements suggest a picture based on acceleration in supernova shocks, including shocks produced by interaction with the winds of massive pre-supernova stars, coupled with a leaky box model of propagation through the galaxy.
