We compare the Metsähovi 22 and 37 GHz total flux density variations of active galactic nuclei with EGRET Phase 1+2+3 gamma-ray data. There is a connection between the type of the source, the phase of the radio flare, the associated radio variability brightness temperature and the gamma-ray emission. It seems that the gamma emission originates within the same shocks which produce the synchrotron flares in radio-induced by the synchrotron self-Compton mechanism.
