Magnetic fields in nearby external galaxies can be studied with rotation measures of polarized sources behind a galaxy, or through the polarization of synchrotron emission. Observing the evolution of magnetic fields in galaxies requires observations of galaxies to high redshift at frequencies from 600 MHz to a few GHz to observe galaxies at the same rest frame frequency. This paper reviews recent developments in the observation of magnetic fields in distant spiral galaxies, and how deep polarization observations can reveal the evolution of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies. Models of polarized source counts for normal galaxies at 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz are presented.
