The proposal is made that the dispersion in rotation measure or the dispersion in depolarization be estimated for various samples of quasars (with and without absorption lines in their optical spectrum) with red shifts in the range 1.7-2.4. The difference in these dispersions for quasars with and without absorption lines would, in principle, yield the rotation measure for intervening galaxies along the line of sight that are responsible for the absorption lines.
