The MACRO (Monopole, Astrophysics, Cosmic Ray Observatory) detector, which is being installed at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, started to take data in 1988 with its first supermodule. Here the first results obtained in the initial run from February 23 to May 28, 1989 are reported. They mainly concern cosmic ray physics and a search for supermassive monopoles.
