The tremendous amount of observational evidence on compact binaries has been gathered mostly through indirect observations, either spectroscopy or photometry, across all the electromagnetic spectrum. The different components of these systems such as photospheres, accretion discs, or circumstellar envelopes are located at distances and within volumes that have escaped spatially resolved observations. However, the advent of long baseline interferometers has opened the way to sub-milli-arcsecond “imaging” and astrometric observations. In this paper I review the demonstrated and potential use of long baseline interferometers for the study of compact objects and their surrounding active environments.
