A wide field spectral imaging telescope was used to record spectra of Comet Hale-Bopp from July 1996 through May 1997. The instrument has a spectral resolution of 4 Angstroms/ covering 4500-8500 Angstroms. The angular resolution of 11('') provides a field of view of approximately 3(deg) . Preliminary analyses of the spectra show the development and spatial extent of neutral and ionized gases in the coma and ion tail.
