The carbon star story began in the late 19th century with Secchi's first detection of carbon features in the spectra of some red stars. Since then, our way to define and detect C stars has changed dramatically. In this paper we review the major identification methods presently used in the literature and we stress how the resulting samples of C- and O-rich stars are significantly method-dependent. As an example of such dependence, we discuss the [Fe/H] vs C/M relations obtained using narrow-band or NIR photometry. Finally, we discuss the Mira approach to the study of the AGB population in galaxies and present an example of how the characterization of the intermediate-age population through Miras can help to shed light on the recent history of NGC 6822.
