Unique in many ways, NGC 6791 is one of the richest and most populous open clusters in our Galaxy, and with an age of 8 - 10 Gyr it is quite possibly the oldest. One of the mysteries of the cluster is the low brightness of its RGB-tip which in combination with other features of the CMD fuels speculation on an enhanced mass loss on the RGB and an evolution avoiding a core-helium flash. We re-investigated the variable star population of the cluster's giant branch to look for AGB star candidates. Time-series images of the cluster were used to identify long-period variable stars. Reanalysis of existing photometric, spectroscopic and proper-motion data was employed to separate cluster and field stars and to characterize the cluster variables.
