The flow of gas in and around barred galaxies is calculated using a second order flux splitting code. For appropriate bar models shocks form along the leading edges of the bar, at positions where dust lanes are observed in barred galaxies. The existence of an inner Lindblad resonance is a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for this. The curvature of the shock loci depends on the axial ratio of the bar.
