Magnetic-monopole pair production by high-energy particle interactions in pulsar magnetospheres is investigated in the framework of the Sturrock (1971) model. Monopole pair production in young and old pulsars is examined, along with pulsar magnetic-field changes due to monopole production, modifications of pulsar spindown, and possible observational consequences, particularly for the Crab pulsar. Pulsar extinction due to magnetic-field changes at the neutron-star surface is analyzed, and the possibility is considered of observing monopoles produced in pulsars and accelerated toward the interstellar medium as cosmic rays. It is shown that a monopole accreted by a pulsar acquires sufficient energy in the magnetic field to induce secondary monopole pair production in the neutron-star crust, so that a pulsar could act as a 'monopole multiplier'. The results obtained are compared with previously reported upper limits to the cross section for monopole production.
