An equation of state for hydrogen and helium matter in stellar conditions has been constructed. The main mechanisms causing a deviation from the ideal gas law have also been taken into account in regions of partial ionization. In the logarithmic density range from about -11 to 0.5 matter is in conditions of partial ionization at least at temperatures not exceeding about 1 million K; thermodynamic quantities (pressure, molecular weight, specific heat, and adiabatic gradient) can be evaluated in the minimum-free-energy outline. A detailed study has been performed in order to investigate the influence of the nonideal gas effects upon the internal partition function of bound states. At larger temperatures and densities matter is fully ionized, and thermodynamic quantities have been computed following the Thomas-Fermi model, corrected for relativistic effects and exchange interactions. A fit to Salpeter's (1961) results has been performed at large densities (log density greater than 5-6).
