Changes with time in the shape and orientation of the earth's orbit and rotational axis precession, due to the gravitational influence exerted by other members of the solar system, in turn lead to terrestrial climate variations that are geologically verifiable for the past and predictable for the future. Another major influence is exerted by encounters with dense clouds of interstellar gas and by nearby supernova explosions. All such influences, however, pale by comparison with collisions with asteroids or comets. Attention is presently given to the consequences of such events for the stability of the terrestrial biosphere.
