A mathematical model is developed to study the restructuring of the space-time structure of the ionosphere the dayside cusp and polar cap regions in response to substorm-related temporal variations in the electric field of magnetospheric convection, the location of the precipitation region, and the spectrum of energetic electrons. Variations of the polar peak and tongue of ionization are analyzed for winter conditions. Increases in electron density during substorms are shown to arise which travel in the antisolar direction in the polar cap; these increases are connected with variations in the precipitating electron flux in the cusp region.
