The combination of Fabry-Perot Interferometer and Meridian Scanning Photometer data from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen (LYR) indicates that the thermospheric wind pattern at approximately 250 km which is observed on the dayside is dependent on the path taken by the polar cusp as it passes over the site. For cusp passes poleward of LYR, the winds are comparatively strong and dominated by the westward (geographic) component. When the cusp passes on the equatorial side, the winds are both generally weaker and poleward-rotated. This may be due to either the effects of a high pressure island caused by particle heating in the cusp, or the retardation that occurs at the confluence of two streams of air, each driven by the ion drag, at the cusp locality.
