The authors have compared the optical magnitudes of weak, lobe-dominated QSOs and strong, core-dominated QSOs. They find differences in the average magnitudes of the two classes of objects which imply at least one magnitude of enhancement of the optical continuum radiation in core-dominated sources if the Orr & Browne unified scheme of QSOs is correct. Some further observational tests of the scheme are suggested.
