This paper discusses the appearance of H-like and He-like iron resonance lines in nongrey model atmospheres of bursting neutron stars. A grid of LTE model atmospheres in radiative equilibrium has been computed for the effective temperature 10 to the 7th K, and for various surface gravities and iron abundances. Electron scattering of X-ray photons has been assumed as a coherent process. Blanketing of the resonance lines of iron was included in the computations of model atmospheres. In all cases the line absorption profiles were computed as the convolution of natural, thermal, and pressure broadening profiles. Resonance lines of both ions practically overlap each other and appear as a very wide and strong single absorption line, with an equivalent width W(E) exceeding 0.16 keV in models with solar iron abundance. W(E) rather weakly depends on the surface gravity of the neutron star. The broadening of the lines is in most cases dominated by large natural broadening. Computed equivalent widths correspond well to recent observations of huge absorption lines in X-ray burst spectra.
