A plot of outflow velocity versus galactic latitude for a sample of 103 galactic stars suggests that carbon stars must originate from stars that had a fairly wide range of masses when they were on the main sequence. The CO rotational emission J = 2 to 1 or 1 to 0 has been detected in the circumstellar envelopes around 22 red giant stars and one planetary nebula. The molecular gas toward NGC 6302 is shown to be associated with the planetary nebula.
