New UBV observations of the UU Herculis star HD 161796 in the years 1985-86 are presented. In particular, the light curve of this star showed an RV Tauri-like behavior in 1985. From a review of all the published data it seems that the light curve has a long term variation with delta V = 0.1 mag and with time-scales longer than 4000 days. A rediscussion of the discrepancy between physical parameters obtained from multicolor photometry and spectrograms shows that it can be removed if the presence of a circumstellar absorption, due to the envelope detected by Parthasarathy and Pottasch (1986) from the analysis of IRAS data, is assumed. The magnitude of this absorption has been estimated to be 0.6 mag in the visual, and a possible extinction law is suggested. The circumstellar envelope could be responsible for the long-term light variations.
