The conditions of formation of the Ca II lines in AGN are investigated and the variations of line intensities with physical parameters are discussed. Ionization equilibrium of Ca(+) is dominated by photoionization by L-alpha photons. Computed intensities of the IR Ca II triplet are in good agreement with observations if the emitting gas has a low temperature, a high density, and a high column density. The stronger the Ca II intensity, the lower the temperature and the higher the column density. These physical conditions are those of the optical Fe II lines emission region. Results derived from the models confirm the correlation found between the Ca II triplet and optical Fe II lines observed in a sample of AGN.
