The paper presents radio continuum observations of NGC 6946 obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at a wavelength of 6.3 cm both in total intensity and linear polarization. Radio emission can be traced out to 24 kpc distance with a radial scale length of 3.1 + or - 0.1 kpc. The average degree of polarization of the synchrotron emission is 9 + or - 2 percent. The distributions of Faraday rotation measures and magnetic field lines in the disk of NGC 6946 were determined by combination of the 6.3 cm with previous 2.8 cm wavelength data. The field lines seem to show large three-dimensional deviations from a regular spiral pattern, possibly caused by a warped magnetic field, the transition to an intergalactic magnetic field or density waves. The analysis of the new data at a wavelength of 6.3 cm alone suggests that the field lines follow the irregualr optical spiral arm structure. The large-scale magnetic field in NGC 9646 cannot be described by any simple model.
