Models of stars evolving along the Hayashi track during the red giant phase or the asymptotic giant phase have been induced to leave these phases and to evolve toward the blue by means of huge surface mass loss. It is found, in contrast with our previous suggestions, that metallicity and evolutionary phase affect the properties of these star models in such a way that it is impossible to define a unique relation linking the residual envelope mass with the luminosity at which blueward evolution is initiated. We describe the way in which this relation depends on metallicity and evolutionary phase.
