We have used the Hubble Space Telescope wide field/planetary camera to study the structure of the bipolar nebular NGC 6164/6165. Our study concentrates on the structure of a number of small clumps of material embedded within the southern lobe of the system (NGC 6165). These knots have a cometary appearance, with bright surfaces facing the central star, and streamers of material pointing away from the star. We present a simple model in which a bow shock forms between the stellar wind and clump material which has been photoionized by the UV radiation from HD 148937. The observed streamers are clump material which has been driven out of the region of high pressure between the clump and the bow shock. This model is able to account for most observed properties of the system quantitatively and leads to an estimated mass-loss rate for the star of 2.2 × 10-5 Msun yr-1.
