Several very large telescopes are being planned or constructed which share the characteristic that the ratio of the f/number of the Cassegrain focus to that of the prime mirror is substantially greater than is common practice. This has the inevitable consequence that the imagery at the Cassegrain focus is highly aberrated. This, together with an unfavourable position of the telescope exit pupil, may prove an obstacle to efficient instrumentation. Key words: instrumentation: miscellaneous - telescopes.
