RR Lyrae variables are important standard candles, and an improved description of these stars will be valuable for determination of the distance scale of the Universe. Recently, N. Simon and coworkers studied improved period-luminosity relations for the first overtone RRc stars, using detailed pulsation models and introducing the Fourier decomposition parameter φ_31_. They test their method on the RR Lyrae stars of ω Centauri with some success. Here we study period-luminosity relations in ω Centauri using the photographic data published by W.C. Martin in 1938. In particular, we investigate the effects of the corrections for unresolved background light suggested by Martin. It is shown that the scatter in simple period-luminosity relations is diminished when background corrections are taken into account. We conclude that photographic magnitudes in the central crowded region of globular clusters may often be too bright by 0.05-0.20mag. Application of background corrections in the new theoretical relation gives inconclusive results.
