Hst Proposal Id #6341 Interstellar Medium

Scientific paper

SN1978K, in the barred galaxy NGC 1313, is the ONLY example of a very young supernova remnant of KNOWN agewhich is X-ray bright. The X-rays likely arise from the blast wave encountering the circumstellar medium. We propose to study the ultraviolet line emission from this remnant, which in such a young remnant, shouldbe exceedingly rich, especially in [Fe II] lines. Other lines give additional density and abundancediagnostics. The UV spectrum is expected to evolve rapidly over the next few years. We hope to study theage-dependent development of the remnant in an external galaxy. SN1987A in the LMC and SN1993J in M81 willundergo the same phenomenon about a decade or so from now. A study of SN1978K now will shed light on issuesto be resolved with observations of SN1987A and SN1993J.
