We propose to use the WFPC2 to observe a proto-elliptical galaxy at redshift z=3.4 (galaxy G2). This galaxy, discovered thanks to its Lyman-alpha emission, is radio quiet and preliminary observations with the FW/PC-1 have shown that its core seems characterized by a light distribution with a de Vaucouleurs profile. These observations have also shown the possible presence of an extended diffused luminosity surrounding the core. This region, in which morphological disturbances are also detected in the form of lumps and an elongated formation, could either be a proto spiral disc or a halo. The presence of such a halo is a prediction of models of dissipative collapse and confirming its existence would be very important to understand the mechanism of early star formation in a protogalaxy. Galaxy G2 is also a member of an association including other 15 galaxies with identical spectral-energy distribution which are spatially clustered together. With a (present) confidence level of 98.8%, this is the most distant cluster of galaxies ever identified. The high-resolution capabilities of HST is necessary to study in detail the morphology of G2. In particular, we want to confirm the shape of the core light profile and the presence of the diffused component. These observations are also important to shed light about the formation of ellipticals and of galaxies in general in a cluster environment.
