A sensitive search for the J = 11 E(2)-E(1) transition of interstellar methane (CH4) has resulted in a peak upper limit which is much less than the value reported by Fox and Jennings in 1978. When combined with the negative results reported by Elldér et al. in 1980, these data rule out the detection of CH4 in Orion KL previously claimed by Fox and Jennings.
