We propose to obtain deep narrow-band images of the most active star forming sites in the Perseus and Orion molecular clouds in the H(alpha), [SII], and Sloan i' filters. Our project has two goals: [1] We will completely assay protostellar outflows emerging from clusters of young stars and evaluate their impacts on the surrounding clouds. Outflows will be identified by their H(alpha) and [SII] emission and will be distinguished from other types of emission nebulae by their distinctive morphology and line ratios, and from reflection nebulae by comparison with Sloan i' images. [2] Young stars will be identified by their H(alpha) emission and colors derived from our i'-band images in conjunction with 2MASS data. These data will allow us to identify pre-main sequence stars down to a mass of 0.1 to 0.2 M_&sun;. We will study complete sets of optical outflows produced in these two star forming regions, measure the proper motions of the brightest shocks that have been previously imaged, estimate the volume filling factors of flows, probe shock morphology, flow impacts on cloud structure and evolution, and provide an archival data set for future stellar and nebular proper motion and variability studies. We will also obtain complete samples of young stars in our fields and study their spatial distribution, clustering, and multiplicity.
